CORVALLIS - Tim Schowalter, a professor of forest entomology at Oregon State University, has been elected vice president for public affairs of the Ecological Society of America.

Schowalter will serve a three-year term for this 7,000-member professional organization of North American ecologists. Duties will include service on the group's governing board to oversee its budget and activities; chairing the Public Affairs Committee to develop the organization's public affairs program; and overseeing the International Relations Committee to promote interaction between the ESA and ecological organizations in other countries.

The ESA interacts with federal agencies, Congressional staff, produces reports on timely environmental issues, and works to communicate about ecological issues to the general public.

Schowalter received his doctorate from the University of Georgia in 1979 and has been on the OSU faculty since 1981.
