CORVALLIS - The College of Engineering at Oregon State University recently presented awards to its students, staff and faculty.

Those recognized included:

• Lew Semprini, an associate professor of civil, construction and environmental engineering who does research on the remediation of hazardous waste sites, received the 1999 Research Award for "sustained, unusually significant and meritorious achievement in research and scholarship."
• Gregg Rothermel, an assistant professor of computer science who has been ranked by students as one of the top instructors in the college, received the 1999 Englebrecht Young Faculty Award.
• Michelle Bothwell, an assistant professor of bioresource engineering, received the Austin-Paul Award, which "recognizes faculty who develop strong mentoring relationships with students."
• Steve Adams, a supervisor of student use of tools and machines in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received the 1999 Classified Employee Award in recognition of "exceptional performance and service."
• Virginia Stonick, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, received the 1999 Carter Award, which "recognizes faculty for outstanding teaching as viewed by students."
• Paul Brotherton, a graduate student, received the 1999 Teaching Assistant Award, which recognizes "contributions beyond the normal expectations of a graduate teaching assistant."
• Kurt Colvin, an instructor in industrial and manufacturing engineering, received the 1999 Research Assistant Award, which recognizes "contributions beyond the normal expectations of a graduate research assistant."
• Brandon Greenley, who just graduated, received the 1999 Burgess-Tektronix Award, which recognizes "an outstanding senior student for academic performance as well as service." -
• Jalal Haddad, director of computer support for the Department of Computer Science, received the 1999 Professional Faculty Award, which recognizes "outstanding performance by a professional faculty member."
