CORVALLIS - Outstanding work in Extension education, communication, and leadership brought honors from their peers in the Oregon State University Extension Association to Extension educators from throughout the state.


  • The Alberta B. Johnston award for excellence in Extension education went to James Hermes, poultry specialist, and Bradford Jeffreys, 4-H youth specialist, both of Corvallis. They were honored for their work with The Incredible Egg educational program for fourth- and fifth-grade students.
  • Clint Jacks, Madras, received the Alberta B. Johnston award for Extension leadership for his work with Extension programs in central Oregon, where he has served since 1974. Jacks is administrator for Extension offices in Deschutes and Jefferson counties as well as on the Warm Springs Reservation, and he is superintendent of the Central Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station.
  • Art Poole, Coquille, Extension agent in Coos and Curry counties, received the Dale and Alice Hoecker award for continued service. He provides leadership for Extension horticultural programs on the south coast and was cited for his work with the cranberry and Easter lily bulb industries.
  • A team of communicators shared the Oscar Hagg Communication award for producing the 24-page "Snapshot of Salmon in Oregon," a tabloid newspaper that was circulated throughout the state last fall. Members of the team are Jeanne Bush, Theresa Novak, Tom Weeks, Bob Rost, Teresa Welch, Lynn Ketchum and Carol Savonen, all of Corvallis, and Andy Duncan and Tom Gentle, Eugene.
  • Susan Busler, Eugene, Extension agent in Lane County, and Gordon Cook, La Grande, regional Extension agent in northeast Oregon, received the association's Experienced Staff awards. Busler was cited for her work with 4-H youth programs in Lane and Lincoln counties. Cook was honored for his work with a variety of crops produced in Union, Baker and Wallowa counties.
  • Welch, Extension publications editor, received the OSUEA Professional Faculty award for her work in producing Extension publications both in print and on-line.
  • Jill Murray, Eugene, was honored with the OSUEA Professional Education Program Assistant award. She serves as nutrition education coordinator for the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program in the Lane County Extension office.
  • Receiving the association's Classified Staff award was Linda Conser, Newport, office specialist in the Sea Grant Marine Education office of the Hatfield Marine Science Center.
