CORVALLIS - A talk by minority issues activist Kevin Powell and Oregon State University's 18th annual Peace Breakfast are among the highlights of the community's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2000, Jan. 7-21.
Activities are open to the public and most are free. The university will cancel classes on Monday, Jan. 17, to allow students, faculty and staff to join the Peace Breakfast, which starts at 7:30 a.m. in the OSU Memorial Union Ballroom. Tickets, available at the door, are $6.50, or $4.50 for students, with children under five admitted free.
Portland activist Kathleen Saadat and student and community leaders will be among the featured speakers at the Peace Breakfast. A number of award presentations are also scheduled.
Powell, who is speaking at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 10, in OSU's LaSells Stewart Center, is a former senior writer for Vibe magazine and an original cast member of MTV's "The Real World." He is the author of "Keepin' It Real : Post-MTV Reflections on Race, Sex, and Politics," and his articles have appeared in The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and The Wall Street Journal.
Powell will speak on "Looking for Martin: Are Dr. King and His Dream Relevant Anymore?" A reception for Powell will be held prior to his talk, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in OSU's Giustina Gallery.
Also scheduled on Jan. 17 is a day-long Habitat for Humanity Work-A-Thon. Volunteers are asked to meet at the OSU Black Cultural Center at 25th Street and Monroe Avenue at 10 a.m. For information, contact Justin Timmons at 541-737-7706. Other planned activities include:

An exhibition of works by African American artists. Exhibit runs from Jan. 10 through Feb. 28, OSU Memorial Union Concourse.
"Sign the Pledge," supporters are asked to sign their names on the bulletin board in the MU Concourse and affirm support for nonviolent social change, equality, justice, freedom and peace. The display runs from Jan. 10-21.
4 p.m.: "Celebrate the Vision: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; the Teacher." a one-hour credit course offered through OSU's Ethnic Studies department. Requirements include attending four Celebration 2000 events, papers and taking a voter's registration test. For information, contact Ethnic Studies at 541-737-0709. 5:30 p.m.: "Colours Conference Follow-up" features trainers from the National Coalition Building Institute to help groups work with issues. MU Rooms 104, 204-209, MU Board Room.
7 p.m.: "An Evening of Song and Poetry," participants are encouraged to present poetry or songs that follow the theme of Celebration 2000 in a two-hour session in the MU Lounge.
Noon: "Eyes on the Prize," part two of a six-part video series on the history of the civil rights struggle in the United States. MU Recreation Center.
7 p.m.: "Interactive Activity," a two-hour session focusing on the dreams of King, led by Walter Kimbrough, director of student activities and leadership at Old Dominion University.

11 a.m.: "Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Party," through 2 p.m. in the OSU Black Cultural Center, 25th Street and Monroe Avenue.
3 p.m.: "Artists Reception and Discussion," a three-hour reception for artists featured in the MU Concourse exhibit. An artists' discussion is set at 4 p.m. MU Lounge and Concourse.
10 a.m.: The fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Fun Run-Walk-Roll. Register at OSU's Langton Hall.
7:30 a.m.: 18th annual OSU Peace Breakfast, featuring a talk by Portland activist Kathleen Saadat. MU Ballroom. Tickets $6.50, $4.50 for students, free for children under 5.
10 a.m.: "Work-A-Thon," contribute a day of labor and work on a Habitat for Humanity housing project aimed at building affordable housing for the community. Meet at OSU Black Cultural Center, 25th Street and Monroe Avenue.
6:30 p.m.: "Candlelight Vigil," MU steps and Quad, bring your own candle.
7 p.m.: "Celebrate the Vision," a two-hour roundtable discussion in the MU Learning Lounge.
