CORVALLIS - Gary Tiedeman, a professor of sociology at Oregon State University, has been elected president of the Interinstitutional Faculty Senate for the year 2000.

The IFS is comprised of 20 individuals elected by their faculty colleagues at the public institutions within the Oregon University System. The organization concerns itself with matters of policy and procedure relating to the structure and operation of higher education in Oregon.

The senate interacts regularly with the State Board of Higher Education, the Chancellor's Office, members of the Oregon Legislature, and other faculty governance organizations.

Tiedeman, who also directs OSU's Liberal Studies Program, joined the Oregon State faculty in 1970. He previously was president of the OSU Faculty Senate and the statewide Association of Oregon Faculties. Tiedeman also has chaired OSU's Department of Sociology, and served as director for its University Honors Program.

He has received service awards from both the university and the College of Liberal Arts.
