CORVALLIS - The Department of Apparel, Interiors, Housing and Merchandising at Oregon State University is hosting a day-long career symposium for its students that is open to the general public.

The free symposium will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21, at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center at OSU. The 2000 AIHM Symposium's theme is "Working with Passion."

Representatives from a number of companies will discuss trends in their fields.

Companies represented include Beth Cowman Interiors, Business Interiors Group, Center of Design for an Aging Society, Columbia Sportswear, Commercial Furnishings, Inc., Conser Homes, Corvallis Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. Doug Ziebart Construction, Inc., Fred Meyer, Inc., gLAs Architectural Group, Jantzen, J.C. Penney, Lang's Rose City, Macy's West, Marti Chaney & Associates, Meier & Frank, Neil Kelly Designers/Remodelers, Nike, Nordstrom, Norm Thompson, Stage Stores, Talbots, and Target.

Keynote speaker is Marti Chaney, president of Marti Chaney & Associates. Chaney's talk, "Working with Passion," will begin at 9 a.m. Chaney, has worked for more than 20 years in the employment field and has written a book, "Imagine Loving Your Work."

From 10 to 11 a.m., concurrent sessions will be held on these topics:

  • Apparel Design & Merchandising Management: "Doing What you Love" 
  • Interior Design: "Career Opportunities within Interior Design" 
  • Housing Studies.

Sessions from 11:20 a.m. to 12:20 p.m. include:

  • Apparel Design and Merchandising Management: "Understanding and Satisfying the Apparel Product Needs of Consumers," 
  • Interior design, "The way it REALLY Works" 
  • Housing Studies.

Graduates will discuss their experiences in sessions from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
