CORVALLIS - Marlan Carlson, a professor and chair of the Department of Music at Oregon State University, will present the first lecture in the College of Liberal Arts 2000-01 Lecture Series on Thursday, Nov. 16.

Carlson's lecture, "Music: A Journey of Contradictions," will begin at 8 p.m. in Benton Hall Room 303. It is free and open to the public.

The lecture series, in its fourth year, recognizes distinguished faculty in the College of Liberal Arts and gives them an opportunity to share their insights with the public. The series this year will spotlight faculty who recently have been honored for their contributions to cultural literacy.

Carlson received the college's Excellence Award this fall and also was presented with the International Service Award. The music director and conductor for the 100-member Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra, Carlson also holds the Endowed Chair for University Orchestras at OSU.

He has toured, performed, conducted and served as director of study programs throughout Europe and Japan.

Carlson, who graduated from the Eastman School of Music, has been principal violinist for the London Symphony Orchestra, the Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, and the Heidelberg Orchestra. He has performed for notable conductors including Leonard Bernstein, Andre Previn and Aaron Copeland.
