CORVALLIS - Gloria Steinem, one of America's foremost feminists, will speak about women's reproductive rights at Oregon State University on Wednesday, Oct. 25.

Steinem's talk, which is free and open to the public, begins at noon in OSU's Memorial Union Lounge. Her appearance is part of the Eighth Annual National Young Women's Day of Action.

Steinem, 66, is a founder of Ms. magazine and in 1970 gained fame with her comment "A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle."

In 1971 she was a co-convener of the National Women's Political Caucus and in 1972 helped found the Ms. Foundation for Women, which raises funds to assist underprivileged girls and women.

The National Young Women's Day of Action is a grassroots campaign to involve people with placing reproductive and sexual freedom with other goals, including racial and economic justice and accessible health care. Events across the country will focus on access to abortion for all women, but particularly for low-income and young women.

Following Steinem's address, OSU's Feminist Coalition, a student group, will offer information about opportunities for involvement on campus.

Steinem's visit is being organized by the coalition. Sponsors include the OSU Memorial Union Program Council Leadership Committee; Saferide; Associated Students of OSU Women's Affairs Task Force; the Corvallis chapter of the National Organization for Women; and the OSU political science, sociology and women studies departments.
