CORVALLIS - Michael Coolen, a professor of music at Oregon State University, will lecture on "In a League of Its Own: Brahms' Concerto No. 2 for Piano and Orchestra," Wednesday, Nov. 8. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. in Benton Hall Room 303 at OSU.

The lecture will preview a concert at OSU two days later. Pianist Alexander Tutunov and the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Marlan Carlson, will perform Brahms' Second Piano Concerto on Friday, Nov. 10, at the LaSells Stewart Center. The concerto is considered by most pianists to be one of the most difficult piano concertos in the standard repertory.

During the first hour of this two-hour presentation, Coolen will use excerpts from the concerto to illustrate both the nature of the piece, as well as the ways that different pianists can play it. Participants will get to share their thoughts on various interpretations, and to choose one pianist/orchestra for a focused listening of the entire concerto during the second hour.
