CORVALLIS - "Ideas Matter," the annual lecture series sponsored by the Department of Philosophy at Oregon State University, will begin its fall schedule on Oct. 12 with a panel discussion.

The series will focus this year on "Minds, Animals and Machines," a look at one of the basic questions of philosophy - what does it mean to be a human being.

OSU philosophers Bill Uzgalis and Jon Dorbolo will lead the Oct. 12 panel discussion, "Introduction to Minds, Machines and Animals: Descartes and Discourse V." It will begin at 4 p.m. in the MU East Forum.

All lectures in the series are free and open to the public.

The series will run throughout the year. Other fall term lectures include:

• Oct. 16: What's Wrong with Anthromorphism? by Elliott Sober, 4 p.m., MU East Forum.

   

• Oct. 26: Animal Determinism: Hobbes and Margaret Cavendish, by Lisa Sarasohn, 4 p.m., MU East Forum.

   

• Nov. 2: Mr. Locke's Parrot: On Animals, Men, and Persons, by Bill Uzgalis, 4 p.m., MU East Forum.

   

• Nov. 7: Darwin: The Portrayal of Darwin in Cartoons in his Lifetime, an OSU Horning Endowment Lecture by Janet Browne, 4 p.m., Memorial Union 208.
