CORVALLIS - A new endowed professorship in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University will help enhance education and research on some of the most innovative approaches to silviculture and forest management.

The Edmund Hayes Professorship in Silviculture Alternatives has been established with the donation of $800,000 to the OSU Foundation from the children of the late Edmund Hayes, a pioneer in the development of the Pacific Northwest forest products industry. The position will be in the OSU Department of Forest Science.

The Hayes family members include his sons Edmund Hayes, Jr., Philip Hayes, Frederick Hayes and his daughter Cornelia Hayes Stevens. They and some of their spouses, including Sis Hayes, Mike Hays and Bill Stevens, were recently honored at an OSU luncheon and ceremony setting up the new professorship.

OSU officials say a faculty member in the new professorship will focus on expanding the array of approaches to silviculture, including study of their economic and ecological implications. The goal of the program includes both the development of new information that is of practical value and its effective dissemination to land managers. It is expected to include traditional as well as innovative new approaches to forest management that may provide for timber production, wildlife enhancement and forest health.

The OSU College of Forestry has four departments, its own research forests, an active Forestry Extension program, and is recognized as an international leader in forestry education and research.
