CORVALLIS - Patricia Wheeler, an Oregon State University professor of oceanic and atmospheric sciences, has been selected as editor of the Journal of Phycology.

The journal is published by the Phycological Society of America, a scientific organization that promotes phycology - the study of algae - and fosters phycological research and education.

Wheeler has been on the faculty of OSU's College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences since 1982 and conducts research on phytoplankton nutrient dynamics and carbon and nitrogen cycles in coastal and oceanic waters, including the northeast Pacific Ocean, the Chukchi Sea, and the central Arctic Ocean.

The Phycological Society has a worldwide membership of 2,000 and subscribers in 63 countries. The journal is published six times a year and includes reports on systematics, ecology, morphology, cytology, physiology, cell biology, molecular biology, genetics and applied phycology. Sample issues can be found on the World Wide Web. The journal office will move to OSU in September 2001. Journal reviews are supervised by a group of 12 associate editors. A 24-member editorial board provides advice on business matters. Chris LeBoeuf will serve as office manager.
