CORVALLIS - Five Oregon State University professors have been selected as 2000-2001 Fulbright scholars.

Laura Rice, associate professor in the Department of English, will conduct research on women and literacy in the Magreb at the Institut Superieur des Langues de Tunis in Tunisia from June 2001 through March 2002. She will do research and field work in both Tunisia and Morocco.

Richard Dick, professor of soil science, has been conducting research at Senegalese Institute for Agricultural Research in Dakar, Senegal since December, 2000. He will return in March. Dick is researching the biochemistry of degraded soils in Senegal in relation to native vegetation and land management.

Timothy Budd, Rasaratnam Logendran and Tim Righetti have already returned from their Fulbright teaching assignments.

Budd, associate professor in the Department of Computer Science, lectured on object-oriented analysis and programming at King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. He taught in Thailand for three months last summer.

Logendran, associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, lectured on research experiences in design and scheduling of cellular manufacturing systems and applying manufacturing modeling techniques to industry-relevant problems. Logendran taught for three months last summer at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Perak, Malaysia.

Righetti spent five months last year lecturing on plant nutrition at Khon Kaen University in Khon Kaen, Thailand. Righetti is a professor in the Department of Horticulture.

This year, approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals received Fulbright grants to lecture or conduct research in 140 countries around the world. A similar number of foreign visiting scholars received awards to come to the United States, primarily as researchers.
