CORVALLIS - Timothy J. Cowles, an Oregon State University educator since 1984, has been named interim dean of the College of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at OSU.

G. Brent Dalrymple, who has served as dean of the college since 1994, retired Feb. 1. Cowles has been associate dean of the college since 1998.

Cowles is known for his work on marine phytoplankton and zooplankton, the microscopic plants and animals that form the base of the food web in the world's oceans.

Cowles received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Stanford University, and a Ph.D. in zoology from Duke University.
