CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Music a la Carte Concert Series will host the flute, cello and harp trio "Odyssey" on Thursday, Jan. 18. The free public concert begins at noon in OSU's Memorial Union lounge.

Alan McCullough on flute, Jeff Defty on cello, and Laura Zaerr on harp will perform a mixture of classical, original and improvisational pieces. The program will include music by Bizet, Debussy, Grieg, Bach, Satie.

Since graduating from the University of Oregon School of Music, Defty has produced several original CDs, notably "Vanish Into Blue," and the collaborative "Sanctuary: Romances for Guitar and Cello." In 1997 Jeff was commissioned by the Eugene Chamber Theater to write a musical depicting the legendary life of Inanna, the ancient Sumerian deity. His CD "The Descent of Inanna" resulted from the theater version.

McCullough has lived for the past 25 years in Eugene where he is an administrative judge. Father of three and backcountry skier, he finds his flute the perfect instrument for emotional and spiritual catharsis. He is noted for his elegant and fiery improvisations, which can be heard on several of Defty's recordings.

Zaerr performs widely throughout Oregon as a member of several groups, including The Oregon Renaissance Band, Village Green, and the Eugene Opera orchestra. She has also composed music for several groups, most recently a concerto for Celtic harp and string orchestra. Her recordings are available locally.
