BEND - A Prineville small business owner, Gary Goodman, has been appointed as the newest member of the Board of Advisors for the Oregon State University Cascades Campus.

Goodman, 53, is an OSU alumnus with a degree in business administration, a former U.S. Navy officer and a Vietnam War veteran with two daughters who are OSU graduates. Owner and manager of Prineville Disposal, he has been active in the Central Oregon community, is a past-president of the Prineville Chamber of Commerce, and has been a consistent supporter of the efforts to bring improved higher education to Central Oregon.

"This new campus will open a lot of educational opportunities to the people of this region and I'll work to ensure that it meets the needs of Prineville area residents," Goodman said. "Right now Crook County has the lowest percentage of college graduates in the Tri-County area and we'd like to see that change."

Goodman also said his perspective may be useful as the owner and operator of a small business, since the small business community actually employs about 80 percent of Central Oregonians.

OSU President Paul Risser, who appointed Goodman, said that his business background and strong OSU ties will make him a valuable addition to the advisory board, which will play a key role in guiding the development of the new branch campus in its formative stages.

"Gary Goodman will be especially valuable to have on our board because he understands the needs and issues of smaller communities, the people who live there and the many business owners that form the backbone of employment in the region," Risser said. "He's been a strong advocate for higher education for many years and we're grateful that he's going to assist us as we create new educational opportunities for all the people of Central Oregon."
