CORVALLIS - Two sisters from Ketchikan, Alaska, have earned Oregon State University Foundation scholarships for the 2001-2002 academic year. Angela and Chelsea Pfeifer, both majoring in exercise and sports science, were recognized by the Foundation Scholarship Awards Committee for their academic potential. Incorporated in 1947, the OSU Foundation is a private, non-profit corporation that works to aid and promote excellence in educational, research, and charitable activities at OSU by seeking, receiving, and administering private gifts for the benefit of the university.

Angela, a sophomore, will receive the $1,500 Kilbuck Family Scholarship, and Chelsea, who will enter the university as a freshman in the fall, will receive the $1,300 David Schacht Scholarship.

The women's parents, Bill and Mary Pfeifer of Ketchikan, are both chiropractors and at least one of the sisters plans to follow her parents' lead.

"I'm planning a career in chiropractic and sports medicine," Angela Pfeifer said. "After graduation from OSU, I plan to enroll at the Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. My sister, Chelsea, is also interested in sports medicine, but she's not sure just what career field she is interested in at this time."

Both women attended Ketchikan High School, with Angela graduating in June 2000 and Chelsea scheduled to graduate this year.

While at OSU, Angela has served as a residence hall council member and has earned a spot on the first novice boat for the university crew team. This summer she plans to return to Alaska and work in retail sales.

This is the first year the OSU Foundation has awarded the Kilbuck Family Scholarship. Funded by Raymond and Nancy Asbury of Portland and other family members, the award honors Joseph Henry Kilbuck, who is Raymond Asbury's maternal grandfather, and Allen B. Scott, a former member of the OSU chemistry department and father of Nancy Asbury.

The David Schacht Scholarship was established by Schacht, who worked as a science and map librarian for OSU until his retirement in 1984. He also was faculty adviser for the Native American Student Association.
