CORVALLIS - A charitable trust established by a Portland businessman will help fund scholarships for Oregon State University students.

Juan Young Trust Scholarships are available for the 2001-02 academic year for lineal descendants of employees of Kienow's Food Stores. If a lineal descendant will be an undergraduate at OSU, they may be eligible for a scholarship.

Eligibility criteria and application forms are available on the OSU Foundation website.

Application deadline is June 1. For information, contact Pam Powell at 541-737-5820. Young, who died in 1997, was the longtime president of Kienow's Food Stores and after his death, the stores were closed. The trust was established under Young's will and grants from the trust began in February 2000.

Kienow's was established in Portland in 1908 by Dan Henry Kienow. Young started working at the company during his freshman year at Washington High School in 1924. In 1942, Young was appointed general manager of the firm.

In 1948, he was elected to the board of United Grocers and served five times as president of the group. He was active in the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Food Division of United Good Neighbors, and served as president of the Columbia Edgewater Country Club and vice president of the Aero Club.

At the time of Young's death, 12 Kienow's Food Stores were operating in the greater Portland area.
