CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University student from Beaverton has earned recognition as a top business management student. Brandon Wentworth, a senior in OSU's College of Business, has received the college's Jack L. Rettig Outstanding Management Student Award for 2001.

Rettig was an OSU business professor who started his career at the university in 1961 and retired in 1986. The award recognizes academic performance as measured by grades, but also includes leadership, class involvement enhancing the learning of peers and demonstrated service to the university and to the community.

Earlier this year, Wentworth received the National Order of Omega Scholarship and Leadership Award, which honors students who have attained a high standard of leadership in fraternity and community activities.

Wentworth, a 1997 graduate of Aloha High School, has served as president of OSU's Interfraternity Council, as well as president of the OSU chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He also held the post of president in the campus chapter of the Order of Omega and served on the Alumni Board of Kappa Sigma, the Department of Psychology tenure and promotion committee and as a founding member of the campus President's Council.

"When I came to OSU I never pictured myself in a leadership position," Wentworth said. Within two years he was president of his fraternity house, and then president of the Interfraternity Council.

"I attribute that to the motivation and support given by my fraternity. I have better grades in college than high school. I also attribute that to my fraternity's support of academics."

Scholastically, Wentworth has consistently been on the OSU's Dean's List, earned several Kappa Sigma scholarships and an Al Reser Outstanding Student Leadership Scholarship.

His community service includes work as an American Heart Association volunteer, service on the Corvallis Boys and Girls Club Christmas Drive and efforts as a community policing volunteer.

He has also raised more than $3,000 for charity through Kappa Sigma philanthropy projects and an additional $1,300 as an individual participant in the OSU Dance Marathon 2000.

Wentworth, who is also studying psychology, will graduate this June and plans to attend law school. Eventually, he plans a career in local Oregon politics.
