CORVALLIS - Katherine Ann Power, who served six years in the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Framingham during the 1990s, will give a reading from her written works on Thursday, May 10, at the Unitarian Fellowship Church in Corvallis.

The reading, which begins at 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.

After her release from prison, Power enrolled at Oregon State University, where she has pursued graduate studies. She is nearing completion of a master's degree in interdisciplinary studies, merging the fields of philosophy, ethics and writing.

Her reading, "Across the Fence: Papers from Prison," will include excerpts from her poems, essays and other writings.

In 1993, Power turned herself in to authorities for crimes committed in 1970. Described by the news media as "a 1960s radical," she made national headlines with her surrender. She received an eight- to 12-year sentence for manslaughter, and was released under Massachusetts state guidelines in 1999 after serving six years.

While in prison, Power completed a liberal studies degree from Boston University through its Prison Education Program - one of the few remaining such programs in the country. She previously had studied at Brandeis University.

The long-time Oregon resident describes herself as a poet, essayist, restaurateur, mother and grandmother. Her writings have appeared in Columbia, the Boston Globe, Best American Poetry 1996, the Middlesex News, and in selected Oregon newspapers.

Her reading is sponsored by the OSU Department of Philosophy and the Unitarian Fellowship Church.
