CORVALLIS - John Hays, a professor of environmental and molecular toxicology at Oregon State University, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Hays was recognized for his research on molecular processes that cells use to maintain their genomic stability, including the discovery that mismatched repair systems interact with ultraviolet photoproducts in DNA.

Founded in 1848, the AAAS is the world's largest federation of scientists, with more than 138,000 members and 275 affiliated societies. It publishes the prestigious professional journal Science and conducts many programs in the areas of science policy, science education and international scientific cooperation. Individuals are recognized as fellows for their efforts in advancing science or fostering applications that are scientifically or socially distinguished.

Hays, an expert in the repair and recombination of ultraviolet-damaged DNA, received his doctorate from the University of California at San Diego. He has been on the OSU faculty since 1987.
