CORVALLIS - More than 1,300 teenage students and advisers from 70 Oregon high schools and four middle schools will visit Oregon State University this Wednesday, Oct. 17, as part of the annual Fall Press Day.

The 16th annual event brings to campus young journalists who are involved with their school newspapers, yearbooks, and other educational and outreach efforts. There are 88 different workshops from which the students can choose, learning about writing, editing, interviewing and other topics from invited media representatives and teachers.

"It's a wonderful event that challenges the students as well as the presenters," said Frank Ragulsky, director of Student Media at OSU. "In the past, such topics as school violence and censorship have generated a lot of interest. I'm sure this year there will be a fair amount of discussion about terrorism and its effect on our schools - and how these young journalists approach such issues."

Fall Press Day is sponsored by OSU, the Northwest Scholastic Press Association, and the Oregon Journalism Education Association. The keynote speaker is H.L. Hall, president of the Journalism Education Association, who will speak on "Do the Write Thing."

Other featured speakers include Cathy Marshall, news anchor for KATU-TV in Portland, and Kristy Yellico, Josten's Yearbook creating marketing director.

Also addressing the journalists will be Joel Thierstein, newly hired director of OSU's New Media Communication program. The presentations will be at OSU's LaSells Stewart Center and the CH2M Hill Alumni Center.
