CORVALLIS - Heinrich von Staden, a leading authority on ancient science and medicine, will deliver the Carson History Lecture at Oregon State University on Monday, Oct. 22, in LaSells Stewart Center's Construction and Engineering Auditorium.

His lecture, "Reading as Therapy: Literacy and the Practice of Medicine in the Greco-Roman World," will begin at 7:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

A faculty member in the School of Historical Studies at the prestigious Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., von Staden has published extensively on Greek and Roman literature, ancient science and medicine. He was on the faculty at Yale University for 30 years, where he was the William Lampson Professor of Classics and Comparative Literature, and received two of Yale's top teaching awards.

Known as a compelling lecture, von Staden has given more than 75 invited lectures at universities throughout the world. He is a corresponding fellow of the British Academy.

A publication written by von Staden, "Herophilus: The Art of Medicine in Early Alexandria," received the Charles Goodwin Award of Merit from the American Philological Association.

The Carson Lecture Series was founded in honor of the late George Carson, a professor of Russian history for many years at OSU, and his wife, Dorothy. The series is sponsored by the OSU Department of History.
