CORVALLIS - About 130 or more young female students and their parents are expected to attend an annual workshop on Saturday, Nov. 3, at Oregon State University. Sponsored by the Association for Women in Science, it is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in science.

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free and open to girls in middle school. Parents are welcome, and can attend a separate workshop to learn how to encourage their daughters in science. Registration can be made by calling Sylvia Harvey at 541-754-6637.

The featured speaker will be Dr. Julie Kittams, a doctor with Willamette Veterinary Clinic, speaking about her work and what education is necessary for a career in science and math. Students will then do a hands-on construction project coordinated by the Science and Math Investigative Learning Experience, or SMILE program based at OSU.

Students will be able to choose from a number of campus tours that will be available, including laboratories in physics, forestry, horticulture, rangeland resources, crop and soil science, animal science, toxicology and other areas, possibly including some local industries.

"A career in science is so very exciting and challenging," said Ann Brodie, one of the event organizers. "This workshop is a chance for young women to see what some of the great opportunities are."
