CORVALLIS - Barbara Bond, a professor of forest science at Oregon State University, has been awarded a Fulbright grant to lecture and conduct research in South America.
Bond will spend four months researching the ecophysiology and invasiveness of introduced woody plants in Argentina and Uruguay and teaching the principles of tree physiology and field techniques for measuring physiological properties of trees. Bond's research will focus on Douglas-fir and ponderosa pine plantations.
"I'll be comparing ecosystem functions, especially water use, of the plantations to native vegetation and surveying areas around plantations for evidence of 'escape' of the plantation species into native ecosystems," Bond said.
Bond will be teaching in Montevideo, Uruguay, and in Buenos Aires and Córdoba, Argentina. She will leave Sept. 14 and return to the United States Jan. 16.
Bond has been a member of the faculty in the Forest Science Department at OSU since 1992 but has been working on campus in many different capacities since 1978.
