CORVALLIS - Oregon State University students have a chance to get safe travel tips and volunteer for community work at a Feb. 26 "Sun, Safety, Service: OSU Safe Spring Break" exhibition.

The event, which is set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in OSU's Memorial Union Ballroom, is focused on helping students keep safe during the university's weeklong spring break, which begins March 23.

"The event is targeted toward students and will be an educational fair designed to bring people and various agencies together to offer information to help students avoid negative impacts on their health and well-being," said organizer Beth McGinnis.

McGinnis, an OSU master's candidate in public health, planned the event as part of a graduate project. Tips covering a variety of subjects, including substance abuse, first aid, transportation, diet, and fitness will be offered, McGinnis said.

A number of community service organizations will also be on-hand seeking student volunteers for the week, she said.

"Here in Oregon, a number of students don't go traveling for spring break - they just stick around town. So, we are offering students a chance to connect with community service agencies and help out around town."

Exhibitors include OSU Student Health Services, Oregon State Police, University Counseling and Psychological Services, Dixon Recreation Center, Habitat for Humanity, Linn Benton Food Share, the American Red Cross, American Automobile Association Oregon, OSU's Outdoor Recreation Center, Peer Health Advocates, university International Programs, Boys and Girls Club, The Arc of Benton County and Benton County Youth Shelter.

There will be a number of prize giveaways, music and bodywork by a licensed massage therapist, McGinnis said. Sponsors include the Memorial Union Program Council, MU Programs, Student Orientation and Retention, the Interfraternity Council, the OSU Student Foundation and Associated Students of OSU.
