CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Agricultural Experiment Station has appointed C.Y. Hu, a professor of animal sciences at OSU, to the position of assistant director. Hu succeeds Robert Witters, who retired.

The OSU Agricultural Experiment Station conducts research on the campus and at a network of branch research facilities around the state, identifying new crops and farming and food processing methods, as well as conducting research in other areas such as the study of fish and wildlife and seafood industry issues.

Hu's responsibilities will include serving as liaison with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service that funds part of the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station's research, coordinating multi-state research projects, overseeing technology transfer and intellectual property rights agreements and coordinating international exchange agreements.

He joined the OSU Department of Animal Sciences in 1985 and was promoted to professor in 1997. Much of his research has focused on understanding fat tissue in livestock and exploring methods of producing leaner meat products. He and his graduate students have received several awards linked to the research.

The director of the OSU Agricultural Experiment Station is Thayne Dutson, dean of the university's College of Agricultural Sciences.
