CORVALLIS - An Oregon State University student from Beaverton has earned the campus' Clara L. Simerville Award of International Education.

Lynne My Nguyen, a freshman, was recognized for her innovative and creative contributions to international understanding on campus and in the community.

Nguyen, who is majoring in general science and has plans for a career in medicine, has chaired the International Students of OSU's Leadership Council and has served as ISOSU president. She also worked on the university's Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration 2002 planning committee.

International Students of OSU focuses on providing a home-away-from-home to the roughly 1,600 international students at OSU. The group brings together people from around the world in an effort to educate students and the community about international issues. Nguyen also helped plan several ISOSU community-wide events.

The Clara L. Simerville Award honors Simerville, who served for 15 years as OSU's foreign student adviser, organizing programs and services for thousands of international students. Simerville, who received her doctorate in education from OSU, also taught in the public schools of Oregon for 13 years, and worked in OSU's Office of the Dean of Women.
