CORVALLIS - A fall term series honoring the legacy of late environmentalist and author Rachel Carson will offer a new twist this week - an "open mike, open carousel" night inviting artists of all types to celebrate the sea.

The free public event, called "Under the Sea-Wind: An Arts Celebration," will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, in the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Oregon State University is sponsoring the series.

Local writers, musicians, photographer and others are invited to read poems or essays, show slides, or sing songs about the sea. Signup begins at 7 p.m., with presentations starting at 7:30 p.m.

Carson was the author of the landmark book, "Silent Spring," which warned about the effects of pesticides on human health and the environment.
