CORVALLIS: Visiting Fulbright scholars from Tajikistan, Malaysia and Ethiopia will be studying forestry, philosophy and culture at Oregon State University during the 2002-03 academic year.

Abdurahim Juraev, an educator in the Department of Philosophy and Culture with Khujand State University in Khujand, Tajikistan, is conducting research on the importance of teaching critical thinking at universities. Juraev will be at OSU until March 2003.

Su-See Lee, a senior research office in the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia, located in Kuala Lumpur, will study the detection and control of phytophthora and phellinus root diseases. Lee, who is in the pathology unit in the institute's Division of Forest Plantation, will be at OSU until the end of October.

Tesfaye Teshome, an assistant professor and vice president for academic and research affairs at Wondo Genet College of Forestry, in Debub University in Awassa, Ethiopia, is studying wastewater treatment through vegetation filters. Tesfaye will be at OSU from March through July of 2003.

This year, nearly 800 U.S. faculty and professionals received Fulbright grants to lecture and conduct research abroad. A comparable amount of foreign scholars received awards to come to the United States the majority as researchers.
