CORVALLIS - The Corvallis Repertory Singers, conducted by Oregon State University's Steven Zielke, will present "The Marriage of Word and Song: Setting the Great Poets" on Saturday, April 12.

The concert begins at 7 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 4515 S.W. West Hills Rd. in Corvallis. The performance will be repeated in Albany on Sunday, Apr. 13, at the United Presbyterian Church, 6th and Ferry, at 3 p.m.

The program features piano with four hands, and sometimes five, and opens with the lively, yet romantic "Liebeslieder Waltzes" by Johannes Brahms.

"Frostiana," Randall Thompson's setting of some of Robert Frost's most famous poetry, includes "The Road Not Taken" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening."

Paul Hindemith's "Six Chansons" is the setting for the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke. Written and performed in French, the poems present quick, delicate images of animals (The Doe, A Swan) and of scenes from nature (Springtime, In Winter, and Orchard).

The concert ends with the comic "Liebeslieder Polkas." The inimitable P.D.Q. Bach sets familiar Restoration and Elizabethan verses, including those of Shakespeare and poet Robert Herrick. Pianists supplying at least the first four hands are Brian Conatser and Angela Carlson.

Tickets, priced at $10 for adults and $4 for students, are available at Scandinavian Trading Company, Grass Roots Books, Beard Frame Shop in Timberhill Shopping Center, the OSU Music Department, and Sid Stevens in Albany. Some may be available at the door. Season tickets and others purchased last fall are valid for either performance.
