CORVALLIS - Michael Omi, an associate professor of Asian American studies and ethnic studies at the University of California-Berkeley, will give a free public lecture on Thursday, Jan. 30, at Oregon State University.

His talk, "Rethinking the Language of Race and Racism," begins at 4 p.m. in Owen Hall Room 102. The talk is sponsored by the University Honors College at OSU.

Omi is co-author of "Racial Formation in the United States," which he wrote with Howard Winant. He also has written numerous articles on racial theory and politics, right-wing political movements, Asian Americans, race relations, and popular culture.

He teaches courses at Berkeley on the history of Asians in America, Asian American politics and political movements, and racial theory and politics. He has a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California-Santa Cruz.

Omi received the University of California-Berkeley's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1990.
