CORVALLIS - The Oregon State University Memorial Union will honor the contributions of Major Ed Allworth, the first director of the MU, with the naming of a conference room in his honor at a public ceremony on Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the Main Lounge.

The events are being scheduled in conjunction with the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Memorial Union. For a complete schedule of Memorial Union anniversary events, visit the web at: http://osumu.org/events/mu_lxxv.htm.

Allworth was born July 6, 1895, in Battleground, Wash. In the fall of 1911, he enrolled at Oregon Agricultural College majoring in commerce. He played fullback for the OAC football team and was active in the Army ROTC program. In 1917, he was commissioned in the regular Army and commanded an infantry unit during World War I.

Allworth received numerous decorations from his wartime service, including the Medal of Honor. At the age of 27, he retired from the military and later accepted a temporary assignment in Corvallis to raise money for the Memorial Union, evolving into a permanent position as MU manager. Allworth spent the majority of his adult life managing the Memorial Union, retiring in 1963.
