CORVALLIS - What do people really appear to be looking for in their personal ads? How do auras work? What is it like to get a Jesuit education?

A discussion of these questions, as well as an original nocturne for piano in d flat minor, and other surprising events will be part of an evening of performance art by Oregon State University music professor Michael Coolen on Friday, Nov. 7, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Benton Hall Room 303.

Coolen, coordinator of theory studies and music editing and recording for OSU's Department of Music, received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington and a bachelor of fine arts degree from Seattle University. His interest in the anthropology of music is reflected in the courses he teaches at OSU. Ethnic influences are found in many of the compositions and arrangements of traditional African and Latin-American music he has written for marimba and steel drum ensembles. He has founded several marimba ensembles, including Balafon and Amadinda.

The Nov. 7 performance - entitled "Looking for . . ." - will contain adult subject matter, which Coolen calls PG-13. Seating is limited. Admission is 50 cents at the door, but Coolen says "you have to give it back if you don't stay for the whole performance!"
