CORVALLIS - A reception to welcome new Oregon State University President Ed Ray and his wife, Beth, to campus will be held on Monday, Oct. 20, in the Memorial Union lounge. The event, scheduled for 4 to 6 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Ray declined a formal investiture, saying he preferred the money earmarked for such a ceremony instead be directed toward scholarships for needy students.

The reception is a chance for students, staff, faculty and the community to meet the Rays personally. It is sponsored by the OSU Foundation Board of Governors and coordinated by the office of University Advancement.

Andy Saultz, president of the Associated Students of Oregon State University, will speak during a brief program that begins at about 5:15 p.m., and Ray will follow with comments.

Ray is the 14th president at OSU. He was named this summer to succeed Paul Risser, who accepted an appointment as chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education.

Before coming to Oregon State, Ray was provost at The Ohio State University, where he was a faculty member and administrator for 33 years. An economist, Ray graduated with a degree in mathematics from Queen's College in New York. He has a master's and Ph.D. in economics from Stanford University.
