ASTORIA - Duncan Law, professor emeritus at Oregon State University's Seafood Laboratory in Astoria, will be honored by the board of directors of the Seafood Consumer Center at a reception and dinner on Aug. 18. Colleagues and past associates are invited to attend.

Former U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin will present an award to Law at the seafood center in Astoria.

"The award is to honor Law for his enthusiasm, vision and commitment to establish the Seafood Consumer Education Center," said Donna Stone, director of the center. "Law was instrumental in developing the center with nearly 40 years of behind-the-scenes gentle, but unyielding determination."

The Seafood Consumer Center is adjacent to OSU's Seafood Laboratory in Astoria.

Open since 1998, the center has taught thousands of consumers and professionals how to buy and prepare seafood. Together, OSU and the Seafood Consumer Center are working toward expanding the connections between consumers, fish harvesters and processors, thereby expanding Oregon's coastal economy.

OSU's Seafood Laboratory was established in Astoria in 1940 to meet the increasing needs of the seafood industry. It maintains an active research program in seafood science and technology and is part of the OSU Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station (COMES) whose mission is to undertake research in the rational utilization of its marine and related resources.

The reception begins at 6:15 p.m., the award will be presented at 7 p.m. and the "Seafood Extraordinaire" dinner by chef Eric Jenkins begins at 7: 45 p.m. The cost is $50 and reservations are required.
