CORVALLIS - Timothy P. White, Oregon State University's provost and executive vice president, was released Tuesday from Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center following surgery last week after a heart attack.

White, who recently was named president of the University of Idaho, said he anticipates a full and speedy recovery from quintuple bypass surgery last Wednesday. The OSU provost had a significant heart attack soon after entering the hospital, allowing for immediate care.

"White has an excellent prognosis," said Thomas L. Marker, M.D. "He gives every sign for a full recovery over a six- to eight-week period of vigorous therapy."

White expressed gratitude to his family, friends and colleagues.

"Karen was the one who encouraged me to come to the emergency room," White said of his wife. "So I took an aspirin and came in. I am fortunate to have done so.

"I am looking forward to a successful presidency at University of Idaho."

Sabah Randhawa, who was due to take over as interim provost and executive vice president on July 1, will instead begin those duties immediately while White recovers.

White will delay the start of his presidency at Idaho until Aug. 1.
