CORVALLIS - The new chairperson and head of the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oregon State University is OSU professor Dan Arp.

Arp came to OSU in 1990 as associate professor and director of OSU's Laboratory for Nitrogen Fixation. His major research interests include genomics of environmentally relevant microorganisms and the biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology of ammonia oxidation (nitrification) and butane utilization by bacteria.

He was recognized in 2002 with his appointment as L.L. Stewart Professor of Gene Research. He served on the faculty of the University of California, Riverside, before coming to OSU.

Arp's appointment was effective at the beginning of this year. He succeeds Stella Coakley, who led Botany and Plant Pathology since 1988. She now serves as associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences.

The OSU Colleges of Agricultural Sciences and Science conducted the institution-wide search for the position.
