CORVALLIS - Michael Omi, co-author of the book "Racial Formation in the United States," will give a free public lecture on Thursday, April 8, that looks at Americans' concepts of race and racial classification.

His talk, "(Mis)Understanding Race: Racial Classification and the Ideology of Colorblindness," begins at 4 p.m. in Room 305 of the Pharmacy Building. It is free and open to the public.

Omi chairs the ethnic studies program at the University of California-Berkeley. He has written numerous articles on racial theory and politics, Asian Americans and social stratification, racist and anti-racist social movements, and other topics relating to race.

Since 1995, he has co-edited a book series on Asian American history and culture for the Temple University Press.

Omi teaches courses at UC-Berkeley on the history of Asians in America, Asian American politics and political movements, and racial theory and politics. He has a Ph.D. in sociology form the University of California-Santa Cruz.

In 1990, Omi received the University of California-Berkeley's Distinguished Teaching Award.
