CORVALLIS - Rebecca Warner, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology at Oregon State University, was honored by OSU's College of Liberal Arts with the CLA Advisory Council Excellence Award.

The award is for excellence in research, scholarship, teaching and service.

Warner was cited for her innovative teaching methods and for seeking out new and creative ways to engage students. The CLA Excellence award carries a $10,000 stipend, which is funded by private gifts to the college from its advisory council.

Also honored were:

• Marion O. Rossi Jr., an assistant professor of speech communication and theater arts, received the Thomas R. Meehan Excellence in Teaching Award for his work with theater students;
• Mark Edwards, an associate professor of sociology, received the CLA Researcher of the Year Award for his studies on hunger;
• Anita Helle, an associate professor of English, received the C. Warren Hovland Service Award for her work in faculty development and mentoring projects;
• Deanna Kingston, an assistant professor of anthropology, received the Bill Wilkins Faculty Development Award, for her emerging studies of Alaskan oral history and incorporating her research into the classroom;
• Hung-yok Ip, an associate professor of history, received the ÉCLAT Faculty Development Award for her professional development and successful grant funding to support her research;
• Laurie Wyant, an office specialist in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, received the Carolyn Maresh Professional Staff Award for her dedication to students and faculty, as well as her networking skills.

The College of Liberal Arts also honored five other faculty members for outstanding performance following their post-tenure review. They include Marlan Carlson, Department of Music; Rolf Fare and Carlos Martins, Department of Economics; Gary Ferngren, Department of History; and Charlotte Headrick, Department of Speech Communications and Theater Arts.

Six faculty members were selected as CLA Master Teachers, a program designed to use some of the college's most experienced and talented faculty in teaching freshmen discovery courses, and linking with cohorts of 20 freshmen students for the entire year.

Selected as CLA Master Teachers were Sally Gallagher, Department of Sociology; Sunil Khanna, Department of Anthropology; Kurt Peters, Department of Ethnic Studies; Lani Roberts, Department of Philosophy; Robert Sahr, Department of Political Science; and Gregg Walker, Department of Speech Communication.
