THE DALLES - Two small farm agricultural production workshops - one on small scale poultry production, the other on greenhouse design and management - are scheduled Saturday, Oct. 9, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center in The Dalles.

These regional workshops are offered at no cost to the public and are aimed at individuals interested in small scale farming operations. The workshops are co-sponsored by the Wasco County office of the Oregon State University Extension Service, the Klickitat County office of the Washington State University Extension Service and a U.S. Department of Agriculture Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program grant.

A small fee may be charged for refreshments.

Registration for the poultry workshop will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the program will run from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jim Hermes, former OSU Extension poultry specialist and current staff chair in the Lincoln County office of the OSU Extension Service, will present on several topics including bird selection, poultry animal behavior, housing, egg production, nutrition and health.

Registration for the greenhouse management workshop will begin at 1 p.m. and the program will run from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. The presenter is Richard Regan, nursery crops researcher at the OSU North Willamette Research and Extension Center. He will discuss greenhouse design, materials, heating systems, crops and other topics.

Handouts and other educational resources will be available at both workshops.
