CORVALLIS - San Francisco-based journalist Mark Hertsgaard will address "Political Commentary" during a lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at Oregon State University.

Free and open to the public, the event will be at 7:30 p.m. in OSU's LaSells Stewart Center at 26th Street and Western Boulevard.

Hertsgaard is an independent journalist who has written five books that have been translated into 15 languages. His writings have also appeared in "The New Yorker," "Time," "Harper's," "The New York Times," and "The Nation."

He is a frequent contributor to National Public Radio and has lectured at Harvard, Yale and Stanford universities, as well as taught non-fiction writing at Johns Hopkins University and the University of California at Berkeley School of Journalism.

Hertsgaard's appearance is part of OSU's Convocations and Lectures Committee Series, which produces three to four major speakers each year intended to broaden the intellectual and spiritual knowledge of the community.

Journalist Susan Jacoby is the spring speaker in the series, with her talk "Secularism in the U.S.," at 7:30 p.m. on March 7, 2005 in LaSells Stewart Center Jacoby is the director of the Center for Inquiry Metro New York, a research and advocacy organization. She is the author of seven books, including "Wild Justice: The Evolution of Revenge," which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize.
