CORVALLIS - A "Beaver Fever Duathlon," combining more than 24 miles of cycling and running through the mid-Willamette Valley, is set for Saturday, Oct. 24 by the Oregon State University Triathlon Club.

The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at Philomath Middle School, 2021 Chapel Drive, Philomath. Information and advance registration forms are online at http://oregonstate.edu/groups/triclub/du/ or from the OSU Sports Club office in Dixon Recreation Center, 541-737-6831. Day of race registration will start at 7 a.m. at the middle school.

Open to the public, both team and individual athletes are welcome to join the competition, which starts with a 3.1 mile run, then turns to an 18.1 mile bike ride and ends with another 3.1 mile run, said Aaron Wangberg, who is coordinating the race for the Triathlon Club.

There will be separate age categories for individual runners, as well special categories for teams, including all-female teams, all-male, and mixed gender, Wangberg said. Fees are $25 for individuals and $30 for team registrations. Entries after Oct. 17 will be charged an additional $5.

Special "Beaver Fever" drinking water bottles will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category, Wangberg said.

The race starts with a run east on Chapel Road and then winds through the hills in the northeast corner of Philomath before heading west on Applegate Street back to the middle school. Racers then climb onto bicycles and head west to Fern Road, south to Decker Road and west to Highway 34, before heading back to the middle school along Grange Hall and Chapel Roads to finish the race with another 3.1 mile run through the city.
