CORVALLIS - Methods and processes required to achieve quality beef production will be featured in a two-day workshop at LaSells Stewart Center on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, April 20-21.

The Oregon Quality Beef Production Conference is sponsored by the OSU Extension Service and the OSU Animal Sciences Department. All interested Pacific Northwest beef producers are invited to attend.

"The workshop is intended to help producers learn more about quality beef carcass development," said Gene Pirelli, OSU Extension Service district livestock-forage agent based in Polk County.

Presenters will speak on a range of topics including genetics, nutrition, implants, quality assurance, niche markets and animal identification processes, Pirelli added. The conference will also offer hands-on sessions where participants will evaluate live animals, and observe how beef is graded and processed into retail cuts, he said.

In addition to Pirelli, presenters at the workshop include Randy Mills and Ron Hathaway, OSU Extension Service livestock agents; Don Hansen, Oregon Department of Agriculture State Veterinarian; and several faculty members of the OSU Department of Animal Sciences.

The workshop will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20. The registration fee is $120, which includes workshop materials and several meals. For more information call Jay Carr, OSU Department of Animal Sciences, telephone: 541-737-1906, email: [email protected].
