CORVALLIS - Oregon State University Honors College students have earned national recognition for their student magazine, The Chronicle.

Published twice a year, The Chronicle has taken first place in the National Collegiate Honors Council student publication competition, said Eric Hill, OSU Honors College faculty adviser and writing instructor.

Student editors Jenny Moser, Casey Woodworth and layout editor Jeff Burright were praised for the magazine's form, content, creativity, originality, consistency of format and appropriateness for their audience.

Medford resident Moser is a junior studying microbiology, Woodworth is a senior speech communications major from Canby, while Burright is a senior English major from Albany.

Moser said she originally had no thoughts about becoming a magazine editor.

"I was looking for something to be involved with on campus and I came across a copy of The Chronicle," she said. "So, I ended up getting involved with the magazine as a staff writer."

Her role intensified until she finally took on editor's duties at the 3,500 circulation publication.

"It's primarily making decisions revolving around organizing the staff, doing copy editing and then turning the material over to the layout editor," Moser said.

"It's totally student-run and a very low-maintenance job for me," Hill said. "They run it and they run it very professionally. They deal with the staff, they deal with the contracts, and they deal with the deadlines. I listen and respond to any questions. It's a joy to see that someone has recognized their work."

The University Honors College was established in 1995 to challenge motivated and academically gifted students at OSU, said Joe Hendricks, dean of the college. The OSU program has attracted a number of top students, not only because of its rigorous academic standards, but because of its unique structure. Students may seek a major in any of Oregon State's colleges and be members of OSU's University Honors College.
