CORVALLIS - Oregon State University will ring in the year of the rooster with a China Night 2005 celebration, beginning at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 6, at the OSU Memorial Union Ballroom.

Tickets for the event are $8 general admission, $6 for OSU students and $4 for children through age 16. Tickets are available in advance at OSU Student Involvement, Snell Hall Room 149. For information, contact Student Involvement at 541-737-2101.

China Night will include a variety of food, music and entertainment. Donations for Mercy Corps tsunami relief efforts in Southeast Asia will also be collected. The student-run Chinese Association of OSU is sponsoring the festivities.

This year, the Chinese Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 9.

The Chinese tradition of naming the year after an animal comes from a story about Buddha. Buddha once staged a gala celebration and invited hundreds of guests, but the only guests that appeared were 12 different animals. To honor each of the animals for their courtesy in attending, Buddha named a year for each animal. The cycle begins with the year of the rat and ends with the year of the boar.
