CORVALLIS - Registration is available for a number of programs being operated during the winter-spring program of Mid-Willamette Valley Saturday Academy at Oregon State University, offering middle school and high school students a range of fun, hands-on educational activities.

Most classes have small fees of $20-40. Scholarship assistance is available, and students from Albany and Mill City schools pay one-half tuition fees.

Saturday Academy is an award-winning, non-profit, pre-college education program hosted by OSU. It's led by community professionals, designed to enhance the traditional school curriculums, and emphasizes the sciences, math and technology. Most offerings are single-day courses and others meet several times.

Classes for middle school students include the "footprints" of radiation; computer languages; realistic drawing; the Evergreen Aviation Museum; creative engineering design; exploring metals and polymers; paper art; careers in medicine; the life and death of bacteria; and aeromodeling.

Classes for high school students include electrathon car redesign; DNA fingerprinting; secret codes; forensic engineering; probabilistic methods; engineering design; computer spreadsheets; material science; and veterinary medicine.
