CORVALLIS - Jackie Balzer has been named dean of Student Life at Oregon State University. Her appointment, which follows a nationwide search, is effective July 1.

As dean of Student Life (the position was formerly dean of Students), Balzer reports directly to the vice provost for Student Affairs. She will oversee the following units: Student Conduct, Diversity Development, Greek Life, Student Involvement, Women's Development, LGBT Services and Community Service/Service Learning.

The Office of the Dean of Student Life strives to maximize student opportunities for involvement, personal development and engagement in the educational experience, Balzer said.

"The office aims to be a primary link for students, faculty, administrators and parents," she said.

Balzer has served as interim dean since August 2003. Since coming to OSU in 1998, she served as coordinator of the First-Year Experience Program for five years and director of Student Orientation & Retention for two years. She also serves as the leader for the Critical Incident Response Team.

Balzer is finishing her doctoral studies in the College of Education. She has a Masters of Education in College Student Services Administration from OSU.

"Oregon State University is fortunate to have a dean of Student Life of the caliber of Jackie Balzer," said Larry Roper, vice provost for Student Affairs. "Jackie is committed to the core values of our university and is a competent, dedicated professional. Jackie will be a strong leader and champion for meeting the educational needs of OSU students."
