CORVALLIS, Ore. - Whether hurtling down a bike trail or heading up a department at Oregon State University, Bill Boggess keeps his focus. Now he'll bring that same focus to his new position as associate dean of OSU's College of Agricultural Sciences.

An economist whose specialty is understanding interactions between agriculture and the environment, Boggess joined OSU's Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics in 1995. He soon became one of the youngest department heads at OSU. Since then he has served on the Oregon State of the Environment Report Science Panel and helped design the Oregon Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program.

He serves on the Oregon Governor's Council of Economic Advisors, the American Agricultural Economics Association and is a past chair of the Food Alliance. He is also president-elect of the OSU Faculty Senate and will hold the position of senate president during his first year as associate dean.

As a cyclist, Boggess is just as fast-paced. Whether pedaling across town to his office on campus or racing across northern France from Paris to Brest and back, Boggess is there for the ride.

As associate dean, Boggess will oversee the administration of several departments within the college, as well as several research centers and branch stations within Oregon's Agricultural Experiment Station, a research arm of OSU.

"Bill brings new energy and ideas to the College of Agricultural Sciences," said Thayne Dutson, dean of the college. "His contributions will be important as the college continues to be a major source of knowledge about agriculture, environmental quality and enhancing agricultural economies and communities."
