MYRTLE POINT, Ore. - Amy Peters has been named to head the Coos County office of the Oregon State University Extension Service, replacing recently retired staff Chair JoAnn Mast.

For close to 12 years, Peters has served Coos County as part of the OSU Extension rangeland faculty, providing training in livestock, dairy and forage management. Her work on nitrogen fertilizer timing for pastures has allowed producers to economically increase early spring feed, and her recent work on armyworm control resulted in an environmentally safe control measure for this destructive pest.

Peters will continue working with farmers and ranchers on the southern Oregon coast in addition to her new administrative responsibilities, according to Deborah Maddy, assistant director of the OSU Extension Service.

OSU Extension has been serving Coos County since 1913. In addition to Peters' work with animal agriculture, OSU faculty members provide research-based information to other important regional industries, including forestry, horticulture and marine science.

Other program areas offered by OSU Extension include family and community development and 4-H. Family and community development focuses on creating programming to address current health issues such as diabetes and childhood obesity. The 4-H youth program, available to all Coos County youth from kindergarten through high school, offers more than 50 projects, including computers, engineering, natural resources and animal science.
